Miles Smith, BA, ACSP

California Teaching Credential, Computer Applications

Founder, President and Director of Curricula

StilLearning.org was founded by Miles Smith, a computer consultant and adult/vocational instructor of Computer Applications, as a non-profit specializing in Computer & Technology Education to enrich the lives of Adults and Seniors who might otherwise be isolated from a world that seemed to grow up around them while they were otherwise occupied with living the only life they knew.

After observing and volunteering at a variety of Senior Centers and Adult schools, Miles saw two fundamental flaws in the majority of those programs... the curriculum was often narrow, limited to the Windows platform and, the teachers and volunteer staff were poorly prepared and often misinformed or down-right wrong, teaching from personal assumptions and notions rather than fact and experience.

Miles knew there had to be an alternative but there didn’t appear to be any. So, he founded StilLearning.org to provide professional and up-to-date technology learning specifically for Adults and Seniors. Funded and supported by grants and donations, StilLearning classrooms are state-of-the-art learning environments without being techno-intimidating. As, Steve Jobs once said, the most sophisticated technology is the one that appears to be the simplest. The curricula is designed to be hands-on and the classroom atmosphere to be friendly, fun and social without being too unstructured. There are no grades or formal measures of retention... StilLearning is more akin to a Computer Camp for Grown-ups... a paradigm that better serves older learners.

The coursework is standardized for consistency but flexible enough to accommodate a variety of learning styles and demographics and each lesson plan is reviewed and updated to reflect new technologies and standards. The instructors are invited to teach based on their ability to engage a class of adult students, to organize daily class activities and to shoot-from-the-hip when necessary.

StilLearning.org is a non-profit specializing in Computer & Technology Education to enrich the lives of Adults and Seniors who might otherwise be isolated from a world that seemed to grow up around them while they were otherwise occupied with living the only life they knew.

Through coursework developed specifically with them in mind, older adults and seniors can learn the skills their grandkids seem to have been born with… the ability to create and communicate in the 21st century using technology that might otherwise intimidate.

Our professional instructors teach using paradigms and metaphors that older generations can relate to. This fosters better understanding and longer retention of the curricula. Our classroom helpers are younger adults and teens who volunteer their time to help the students learn, thereby fostering greater understanding and trust between generations that otherwise seem so alien.
